Hi.
I would like to tell you about the improoved accessibility of the twitter website with combination with nvda.
Please note that you can take advantage of the new website only with latest nvda snapshot. I don't know how well it works with the official release 2013.1.1.
Also i don't know how well it works with jaws and other screen readers.

Recently twitter added some shortcuts which make reading and interacting with twits very pleasant experience.
For the shortcuts to work you have to be in focus mode, in other words outsite of the virtual buffer of your screen reader.
With nvda you press nvda+space to exit brows mode.
The most important shortcuts are as follows.
The letter J. Go to the next twit.
The letter K. Go to previous twit.
Period, dot or fullstop. Load more twits.
The letter n. Create new twit.
The letter R. Reply to a twit.
The letter T. Retwit.
The letter M. Direct message.
I asume that if you press m you will send a direct message to the user of the twit you are focused at the time.
Letter F. Favorite twit.
Letter B. Block user.
Letter U. Unblock user.
Enter. Oppen twit details.
Letter L. Close all oppen twits.
Slash. Search for something.

These are the most important in my oppinion.
For the compleete list of shortcuts you can press the question mark.

Thanks for the tip; It works with Google Chromium and Chromevox, as well; will try Firefox and Orca.

Hmm, any tips on how to do this with Jaws? For example, pressing the letter J brings up a dialog for jump to line.

Sounds like you need to use the JAWS 'pass-through' key, first? I forget whether there is such a thing.

yes there is. its JawsKey+topNum3.
it'll say "Enter key to pass thru"

Or just turn off your virtual cursor first insert z then the quick keys like j won't do JAWS functions. I haven't tried any of that though.

hmmm…. interesting. I still like my clients though. no website you need to access. and the tube for the pc is handy even though it has a lot of interesting issues.

My twitter client of choice is called ttytter but it's nice to know the web site is now usable, since easychirp.com is still unavailable.

I am using a twitter client most of the time as well called chicken nugget but i found the improovements very interesting. We might need to use the website sometimes when using another computer etc.

Cool. Yeah, I discovered the jaws passthrough key by accident the other day. Thanks for that suggestion as well as the one to turn off the virtual curser.
Because my laptop is still in the painful process of dying, I've discoverered that it's easier to read stuff by using twitterific but tthis will still be great for when I get a new laptop and on this computer as well.
Once again, yall rock.

Post 13 by Dave_H (the boringest guy you'll ever know) on Tuesday, 06-Aug-2013 20:26:19

Twitterific is a client for IOS and/or OSX.

I notice there isn't a shortcut to read conversation threads, still this is a very good start.

Post 17 by nikos (English words from a Greek thinking brain) on Wednesday, 07-Aug-2013 4:59:03

Hi.
I asume that if you press enter to view the twit details that it will show the conversation but i didn't try it so i might be wrong.

Thanks, I got it to work, it only seems to show you the first 7 messages in the thread though.

I'm not sure if it's Twitter or NVDA that won't let me pull up more of the conversation, probably both.
